Featured Artist Of The Week: Cørey

October 27, 20173 min read

Corey Crowder (rap name: cørey) is a 21 year old upcoming hip hop artist born in Nashville, Tennessee.

Corey lived happily in Nashville until the age of 8, where he moved to Franklin, Tennessee and his life abruptly changed. Franklin, TN is a predominantly white city and is located in one of the most wealthiest counties in America. Corey lived in a very rural area of Franklin on 30 acres of land left by his ancestors who have lived on the land for more than 100 years. He often had animals that lived on the land including dogs, horses, chickens, and more. Corey lived a good life at home. He has a loving family who is blessed to be able to live comfortably with little financial struggle.

While his home and family seemed perfect, Corey’s social life was a disaster. All through elementary, middle, and high school, Corey faced harsh conditions all because of the color of his skin. Everyday for 10+ years, Corey went through bullying, severe depression, anxiety, and even had suicidal thoughts at one point. Corey looked for his family for help but nothing got better. This is where his love of music started.

As Corey started middle school, he received his first iPod. At 11 years old, Corey was exposed to NWA, Tupac, Biggie, Lil Wayne, Nas, Jay Z, and much more. Hearing this music and listening to other people rap about their struggles gave him hope. Corey fell in love with all music, no matter the genre, and used it to escape from his depression and anxiety. Corey then started writing music at the age of 12 and recorded his first song at 16 years old. Through his love for music, Corey started writing poetry and participates in open mics occasionally.

Now, Corey attends The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he studies Finance. Corey continues to write music and has made a name for himself on iTunes & Spotify with his newly released EP “New Phone”. Corey is a very lyrical artist that uses metaphors, admirable vocabulary, and a little storytelling to elaborate on his struggles in a very unique way. The way he puts his songs together and the overall message of his projects are all very poetic and he also has an old school hip hop type of vibe. Corey is definitely a distinctive hip hop artist compared to the hottest rappers out now. Music has certainly shaped Corey’s life for the better as he always states, “without music, I’d be dead right now.”

Go listen to cørey’s new project “New Phone – EP” as well as his older projects on Spotify
