YNW Melly won’t face trial for witness tampering anymore since the prosecutors dropped the charges.
The Florida rapper was supposed to go to trial on Wednesday (Jan. 21). But on Tuesday (Jan. 20), during a hearing, prosecutors decided to end the case.
Melly’s lawyers, Drew Findling and Carol Haughwout, shared their thoughts with AlwaysBeOG about this update.
They said, “We are glad the court dismissed the tampering and gang-related charges today. As Melly’s new legal team, we quickly saw there was no crime. Sadly, it took the State 652 days, right up to the trial, to realize this.”
They continued, “We now hope to get Mr. Demons released. He’s been held in very strict conditions for too long based on dropped charges. His release will let him help with his defense in the upcoming trial, which we will fight strongly.”
Melly has been in jail since 2019 for double murder involving his childhood friends Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams in 2018. His first trial ended without a verdict in 2023, but the prosecutors want to try again.
In October 2023, Melly faced witness tampering charges, accused of persuading his ex-girlfriend Mariah Hamilton and her mother not to testify.
Melly’s retrial for double murder is set for January 2027.
